About SESDAC
We have a basic fundamental philosophy that we center our organization around, that is: People who receive services from SESDAC, Inc. are first and foremost people with abilities. It is our philosophy that all people are capable of full participation in their community of choice when provided supports and/or services appropriate to their needs. SESDAC, Inc. encourages each person to fully exercise his/her personal preference and power each day.
History of SESDAC
SESDAC, Inc. was first initiated in March of 1973. A memo from Dr. Monroe to interested Vermillion Citizens regarding the possibility of starting the Center served as the impetus for a meeting on March 13. Those concerned citizens in attendance of that meeting later formed the Vocational Rehabilitation Committee of the Clay-Union Association for Retarded Citizens. Organizational details, such as name, programming, legal matters, location, etc. were established during the summer of 1973 with assistance from the Office of Mental Health and Mental Retardation.
In August, 1973, a location was secured at 5 Market Street, Vermillion. A part-time program operating two hours a day was initiated in September 1973. There were six consumers served that year. In September 1974 the part-time program was expanded to full-time and the first full-time instructor was hired.
In January of 1975 the Services were expanded to include a residential program designed to provide board, room, and supervision for individuals from outside the Vermillion area, who would otherwise not be able to participate due to transportation problems. The first group home was occupied by 10 residents and located at 325 Center Street. Also, in 1975, the Center was incorporated as a non-profit corporation.
In 1976 the agency grew to support 14 individuals and in 1977 construction began on a new Center. The Center, 207 Duke Street, was finished in January 1978.
Thirty-five years later SESDAC, Inc. is still centered on the basic principles of dignity, respect, and quality. SESDAC, Inc. is a thriving center that has expanded its services to include: residential, supported living, service coordination, employment services, job coaching, transportation, medical services, guardianship services, family support services, as well as many others. Today, we support in excess of 70 individuals in Clay and Union counties and employ around 140 people to deliver quality services that are second to none.
