September 12 - 18, 2010 Proclaimed Direct Support Professionals WeekThis week, communities across the nation will pause to honor a critical – but often neglected – segment of the workforce. National Direct Support Professional Recognition Week, as declared by the U.S. Senate, recognizes Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) for the quality supports they provide to million of Americans with disabilities This workforce is known by a variety of names across the country: direct service workers, direct care workers, direct support workers, home health aides, personal services aides, long‐term care aides. No matter how you refer to these compassionate health care professionals, DSPs offer a wide range of supportive services on a daily basis so that individuals with developmental and other types of disabilities can live and work in their communities. Among the many services DSPs provides are: habilitation, health needs, personal care and hygiene, employment training, transportation, recreation, housekeeping and other home management-related needs. DSPs play a vital role in our respective communities as they promote independence and inclusion for individuals with disabilities. Out of respect for their work and dedication to their clients and profession, we all should take the time to recognize DSPs for the immeasurable difference they make each day in the lives of people with disabilities.
